in this chapter, tom robinson is bein asked questions for if he had beat and raped mayella ewell. when being asked the question of why he worked for mayella without pay, he said that he felt sorry for her and that he wanted to help.

in chapter 18, mayella ewell was called to the stand to be questioned by Atticus. after awile of being asked the same question over and over again, Mayella began to cry from being under so much pressure.
